Antique Scientific Instrument Fair (April)

Sunday 17th April 2016

This was the fourth time that the Club has had a stand at the Antique Scientific Instrument Fair as part of our microscopy outreach programme. The Fair is organised by Don Edwards of the Tideswell Dale Rock Shop, who kindly offered the Club a free table at the event in the Doubletree by Hilton Hotel in London. As a result of some last-minute cancellations, this time we had a table in the main sales area, and we had more visits from dealers than at previous Fairs.

Stephen Parker and Alan Wood manned the Club’s table with copies of Brian Bracegirdle’s last book (The Quekett Microscopical Club 1865–2015) and 3 of his older titles (Microscopical Mounts and Mounters, Notes on Modern Microscope Manufacturers and A History of Photography with the Light Microscope). Stephen took a black and brass J. Swift polarising microscope with some J. T. Norman slides, and Alan used one of the Club’s laptops to show photographs taken by members and photographs of antique items from Club auctions.

Don asked if we could identify an unusual item, and Stephen immediately recognised it as a Nachet reflected-light Nomarski interference contrast attachment.

As usual, there were dealers from continental Europe as well as from the United Kingdom, selling items including microscopes, accessories, boxes of slides, slides of microphotographs, and small bone and ivory slides each with with 4–6 specimens. There were also anatomical models, telescopes, binoculars, still cameras, surgical instruments, drawing instruments, surveying instruments, laboratory equipment, several globes, and even an Enigma machine on the Bonhams stand.
